Google Updater and Google Pack

Even though I don’t really like having something install software for me without allowing me to customize any settings, Google Updater for the Google Pack is really nice. I like the idea of being able to update any installed software without having to open up the browser and check to see if there are any updates for whatever software I want to update. Google Updater can also be set to automatically update for you.

Google Updater

If you don’t want everything that comes included in the Google Pack, you can remove the ones you don’t want installed. For example, I only wanted Picasa and nothing else, so I removed all the others. Now, anytime I open up Google Updater, it checks for updates to any of the software from Google and its partners, such as Adobe Reader.

If you would like to see what is offered in the Google Pack and possibly download it, check it out

Steps to Installing Yakuake

For those of you who are coming here for help installing Yakuake, you may not have found what you were looking for. I apologize. I should have included those steps in my entry: Terminal on Demand. Or, you could just read the INSTALL file that is provided with Yakuake. This file goes into a lot more detail if you’re having problems.

I’m not going to provide a very detailed step-by-step tutorial, because I hope that most of you know how to follow a few commands. If you’re ready to begin, open a terminal and follow these steps:

  1. Enter in the su command to log in as root.
  2. After logging in, make sure you’re in the Yakuake directory that was created after extracting the compressed archive. I will assume you know how to use the cd command.
  3. Enter in ./configure (this may take a while)
  4. Enter in make
  5. Enter in make install
  6. Enter in make clean to remove files from the source code directory. (optional)

Assuming everything went smoothly without any errors during steps 3-5, Yakuake should be installed and ready to use. As I noted in my previous entry (linked above), I recommend changing the Kerry Beagle Search’s F12 shortcut, if you have that on your system. Yakuake uses F12 to open.

Save Time With Time Management Software

Do you find yourself wasting a lot of time trying to remember things you have to do for the day, the week, or even the month? I sometimes do! I used to store everything in Outlook, but since I was using the 2007 beta, it expired, so I was forced to stop adding appointments and other things in the calendar. Now I’m stuck writing things down on a calendar on the wall and to-do lists on pieces of paper. I usually have to remind myself to look at the calendar and remember to record things onto the calendar, too.

Run Meebo As Its Own Application

This has made my day! I’m not even sure that anyone in the Meebo forum knows about this since I have never seen it mentioned in my search for something similar. Chris Kasten from Solo Technology created it. Thank you Chris! Meebo can now run in its own window, rather than keeping the browser open 24/7.

Meebo as its own application

The features include:

  • Running Meebo as its own application (as seen in screenshot).
  • Ability to minimize to the tray.
  • Open other websites.

Those are enough features for me! Well, I would love to see the icon in the tray blink or even display a popup notification down there telling me what’s going on when it’s minimized. Maybe in the future Chris?
