Notepad Chaos Tumblr Theme

A lot of you have been waiting for this theme to be made available for Tumblr. I had requested permission to make it available to the public! I wouldn’t have done this if I hadn’t received so many comments about it on my Tumblr blog, Random Alisha. Thanks to Smashing Magazine and Evan Eckard, you can download the theme!

Because I am new to Tumblr and how the code works, please do not direct Tumblr questions to me. There is help for that on the Tumblr site. If you need any help regarding setting up the theme, I will do my best to help you. If you need to customize any part of the theme such as the images, please download the original WordPress theme. There is a PSD file included.

Features

  • Tumblr’s custom colors
  • Feed icons. If you import any feeds from RSS Feed, Last.fm, Digg, Twitter or Pownce, the theme will display an icon. For example, if you say something on Pownce, on your Tumblr page there will be a little Pownce icon on the left side.
  • Disqus comments per post and in the sidebar.
  • Last.fm recently listened to next to blog title via feed.informer.

Instructions

To use this theme, download the zip file and extract it. Open up notepad_tumblr.html with an editor. I use Notepad++ if you would prefer not using plain Notepad. You will need to replace all instances of “yourdomain.com/tumblr/images” in the URLs with your actual domain/location of where you will place the images.

For the about link underneath the search, you will need to edit the link in the code. If you don’t have an about page, then just create a post and then get the link to the post and insert it into the correct place in the code.

Then, at the top, underneath the title of your blog, there are a few links for Twitter, Pownce, etc. You will need to replace those as well with your own.

You will need to replace “yourname” where Disqus comments appear with your own when you sign up. I have left comments in the code. There are two places where it needs to be changed. And then if you want the recent comments in the sidebar, I’ve left a comment of where to place that code towards the bottom of it. You will have to get the code for that from your Disqus account.

For the recently listened to Last.fm song next to the blog title, you will need to go to the feed.informer website and create your own code and replace it with the one between the comment.

For Tumblr’s custom colors, if you go to your dashboard to customize the theme, you will see a Colors tab. The following can be customized: Title (blog title), Description (appears in the footer), Nav Links (recent posts list in the sidebar), Date, Post-Title, Text (main text throughout), Inline Link (links inside a post). None of the others will change anything in the theme. If you need anything more custom than that, you will need to look through the code and edit it.

After you have edited the theme, copy and paste it into Tumblr!

To see the theme in action, view the demo (my own tumblr blog). If you’re ready, go ahead and download the theme!

If anything at all was confusing with the instructions, please let me know and I’ll try to help you.

Keep Your Pownce and Twitter Posts Separate

1

With so many social networks available, it’s very hard to pick just one. Some of your friends and family choose one, others choose a different one, and then maybe a couple picked another. You either get invites from them or they tell you about it and you feel obligated to create an account. I’ve been there, but refused to do it again when family and friends started in with their MySpace pages.

I was slow grabbing a Twitter account and started off with Pownce. I like the ability to share pictures, videos and music. I eventually signed up to Twitter and started using it. I can see the difference between Pownce and Twitter and don’t mind using them for two different things. I haven’t even once wanted to post to both with the same message. Why? The people who follow me on Twitter are different from the people who read my posts on Pownce. If anyone wanted to read what I have to say/share on either one, they would add me.

Everyone keeps comparing Pownce and Twitter, but really, they are two different services. One offers several features, the other offers mostly just 140 characters. In my opinion, Pownce is more like StumbleUpon than it is like Twitter in the sharing aspect of it (images, videos..). Twitter is like having a chatroom open and reading what people have to say with the occasional link to read more.

I’m not telling you to stop cross-posting to both Pownce and Twitter, but try to consider the people who are following you. Are they going to be interested in reading what you have to say on Pownce with an @reply to someone on Twitter? What about the people who follow you on both Twitter and Pownce? Do they want to read duplicate posts? How do they know which one they should reply to that will get a response back? It wastes time. You may be saving time by posting the same message to both, but you are wasting other people’s time. Also, think about the replies. People on Pownce won’t see any of the Twitter replies, and vice versa, so they may be missing the whole conversation.

If you used IM the same way, wouldn’t you be annoyed if someone sent the same message to you with all of their IM accounts at the same time? (Yahoo!, MSN, AIM, Google, etc.)

There may come a time when you want to hear what both Pownce and Twitter people have to say, because maybe you’re asking for help or for an opinion or getting an idea for a new blog post. But cross-posting to both all the time could become annoying to some.

Suggestions

  • Pownce allows you to group your friends. Maybe you could create a group that wants to receive your Twitter posts on Pownce. This may or may not work depending on the client, if it allows you to select a group.
  • Prefix your posts with Twitter/Pownce so if someone is interested, they can follow up on either.
  • Use Twitter and Pownce as two separate services, as they were designed.

As I said, I’m not telling you to stop, but just keep your friends in mind the next time you cross-post. If anyone else has a suggestion or reason why Pownce and Twitter posts should (or shouldn’t) remain separate, please comment.

Instant Messaging, Social Networking and E-mail Together

Digsby has it all.  Connect to AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! networks. Check your e-mail from Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail or any POP/IMAP accounts. For social networking, get updates for Facebook or MySpace! Who needs MySpace though?

Digsby Accounts

Digbsby Contact List

Some of you may notice it looks similar to Pidgin, except Pidgin doesn’t include all of the features that Digsby does. Digsby is still in beta and currently doesn’t support audio/video chats. For some, that might be a deal breaker.

Unfortunately, the social networks don’t include Twitter and Pownce access. Hopefully it will support those in the future. Of course, the temporary fix for Twitter is to setup up Twitter to send notifications to your Google Talk account.

I love Digsby’s notifications. They aren’t like notifications from similar applications. Besides the common status notifications, Digsby alerts of you a new message with the option of typing in a response in the little notification popup.

Digsby Notification Popup

One unimportant feature that I would like to see is skinning of the notification popup. Right now it has an almost bulky appearance to it. I would like it to have customizable transparency and the option to choose other background colors.

Another feature I want is removing the grouping by network. I just want my contacts listed without groups and without moving them into a single group, because then if I login someplace else, it will change how I see them.

Something that does need to be fixed is the memory usage. I’ve found it reach almost 100MB. When the contact list is minimized and there aren’t any chat windows open, it can use about 60MB. Since Digsby is still beta, it’s okay for now and that is something they are working on.

If you like using applications like Trillian, Miranda, or Pidgin, check out Digsby!

Public Release of Pownce Brings New Features

Pownce was opened to the public as of midnight. I wasn’t able to stay awake when this happened, but when I woke up this morning I wanted to see what new features Pownce brought. There are a few features that I have been waiting for.

Read replies and reply directly from the Pownce desktop client. In previous versions this wasn’t possible. The biggest complaint I’ve seen so far (myself included) is not being able to minimize to the tray. A tray icon was added for Pownce, but its only function is to tell you when there are new messages. Pownce still minimizes to the taskbar. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the next version. Until then, check out PownceTray.

You may notice that if you use PownceTray with the newer version of the client, that there will be two icons in the system tray. If you hide Pownce’s icon in the notification settings, only PownceTray’s icon will be displayed. This is a temporary fix.

Finding old and new friends is now easier. Choose to import your friends from other network sites and e-mail accounts, such as Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Yahoo and more. You can also search for people or look through the Featured Powncers list and find some worthy Powncers.

Minimize Pownce to the Tray

I don’t know if anyone else is annoyed by always open applications sitting in the taskbar, but I like using the system tray. I don’t like filling up the taskbar with applications that I don’t always use, but like to keep open.

Pownce is one of those applications that just sits open with nowhere to go. I’m sure with a newer version, the feature might be added like it is with Snitter (for Twitter), but until then, I wanted a solution now.

Pownce

I didn’t know there was a way to minimize Pownce, but I looked through Google and came across one solution. It’s a tiny little app called PownceTray that you have to run in order to minimize Pownce to the system tray. It places the Pownce icon in the tray. Double-click to reopen and minimize to send it to the tray again.

Pownce Tray

One feature I think Pownce needs is notification of new messages like how Snitter has. Even a flashing icon in the tray would do. For now, I’m happy that I can minimize Pownce to the tray!
