Flickr’s Own iPhone/iPod Touch App

I’m not sure what took Yahoo! so long to release their own app. This app was a surprise to me as I haven’t had much time to pay attention to anything going on, so I don’t know if this was news that shocked everyone else or just me. This was a good surprise though! I grabbed the app the day it was released.

The Flickr app really makes using Flickr on my iPod Touch a lot easier and more enjoyable. I actually have fun looking through my contact’s photos now. It’s better than opening Flickr in the browser, whether on the iPod Touch or computer!

Opening the app displays a slideshow of recent photos from your contacts. At the top of the app, you can search for photos and videos from your contacts, your photostream or all. Easily view your own photos or videos you’ve uploaded.

The app also makes it easy to upload photos to your photostream by touching the little camera icon at the top right of the app. I don’t know if it gives the iPhone more options, but on the iPod Touch it allows me to upload from Library, since there currently isn’t a camera in the iPod Touch (2nd generation).

I have noticed if I move a little too quickly through the app, it will crash. So, be patient and take your time or you will be re-opening the app again!

Go get the app if you haven’t already. Look for ‘Flickr’ in the App Store!

iTwitter: Best iPhone/iPod Touch Twitter App?

After looking through all of the Twitter apps in the App Store, I had settled on Twitterific because it seemed to offer everything I was looking for and was nice to look at. The only problem is the frequent crashing when scrolling through tweets. (Follow me on Twitter)

Then along came iTwitter. I noticed it was free and grabbed it to check it out. It was love at first sight. Okay, the looks really had nothing to do with it. I fell in love with the features (e.g. Push Notifications). The UI when viewing tweets could use some improvements!

iTwitter has yet to crash since day one. It does need some more features to be at the top, but I think it could happen since the developer, NibiruTech, has a UserVoice page to see what users are looking for. It shows the developer is listening and wants to improve.

iTwitter was the first Twitter app to include Push Notifications, but this is currently limited to only iTwitter users. I did read a comment by the developer that Push Notifications for all users is being worked on. This is great news!

If iTwitter doesn’t see improvements soon, including Push Notifications for all users, I don’t think many people will switch because they are already comfortable with the app they use and the cost of purchasing a new app, currently at $2.99. Yes, I did say I got the app for free, because it was available for free for a limited time.

iTwitter has a lot of features, including features I haven’t seen in other apps. As long as the developer continues to improve, I think this app could be one of the top apps.

Current Features

  • Push Notifications between iTwitter users.
  • Displays the number of new tweets to read inside the app.
  • Allows multiple Twitter accounts.
  • Save groups and searches.
  • View tweets of people nearby.
  • When writing a new tweet or reply, if you typed some text and cancel, you can go back and the text will be there. Some people might find that annoying, but I don’t. This is the best feature!
  • Shows the original tweet below the reply.
  • If there is a link or a Twitter user (@name), when you touch the tweet, options will be displayed that allow you to reply, retweet, favorite or visit the link in the built-in browser or visit the Twitter user’s ‘profile’.
  • Touching a Twitter user’s picture will display a few options and a short summary of their info. From here, you can follow or unfollow and send a direct message. Touch outside of the box and will disappear.
  • Delete all read tweets.
  • Mark all tweets as read.
  • View users you are following or those who are following you.
  • Landscape keyboard and in-line browser.
  • Customize the user home screen by moving around groups, saved searches, etc.
  • Cached tweets so everything loads faster.

Features I Would Like

  • Automatic refreshing of tweets so I don’t have to manually refresh. Option to change the intervals of regular tweets, replies and direct messages are needed.
  • Push Notification needs to work with all users, regardless of which app they are using. Because again, some people aren’t going to switch if they are happy with the one they have, which makes iTwitter users unhappy and more likely to switch to another Push Notification supporting app when one becomes available.
  • Push Notifications need to display who sent the reply or direct message. Option to change whether you want to see just who sent it, who sent it and the tweet, just the tweet, or just that you received a reply or direct message.
  • Remove the chat bubbles  for each tweet and just put the tweets in plain boxes, similar to Twitterific and TweetDeck. I am not a fan of the chat bubbles and they take up too much space. I would like to see more tweets in a view.
  • Option to view read or unread tweets. Currently, if I read about half of them and still have the rest to read but I go to another screen and then I come back, I have to look at all the tweets I have read before I can view the unread ones.
  • The app icon should display the number of new replies and direct messages that were just pushed.
  • Include trending topics. Not really an important feature for me, since I don’t really care about trending topics, but a lot of people seem to.
  • Replies and direct messages need their own color to separate them from regular tweets. Would be even more awesome if re-tweets could also have their own color.
  • Listing of followers and following is really slow. Should be cached and updated every so often.
  • List of followers needs to be fixed to allow me to view more. It currently only allows me to view around 65+.

Did you try iTwitter? If so, are you still using it?

Seesmic Desktop: What I Like, What I Don’t Like

First, I’m not a fan of TweetDeck. It’s ugly; my eyes can’t stand white on black. And, it made me feel too overwhelmed. Twitter (follow me) already has enough information coming through it, I don’t need an application making Twitter harder to follow. Twhirl solved this for me and has everything I need without filling up too much of the screen. Not everyone has a 30″ screen!

seesmicdesktop_home

Now that Twhirl is ‘done’, Seesmic Desktop is here. When I first heard of Seesmic Desktop, I immediately thought of TweetDeck and was disappointed, but interested. Once I saw it in action, I was pleased. It’s easier on the eyes and doesn’t put too much information in my face. Well, right now it kind of does, but more features are going to be added which will allow me to stop it from happening. (I heard maybe a more Twhirl-like view?) For example, the excessive notifications for every little thing which fills up half or most of my (19″ widescreen @ 1440×900) screen has to stop. If it doesn’t soon, I will stop using it.

I think it has a lot of potential to be one of the most used apps for Twitter. One feature missing from Twitter is the ability to group people you are following. This feature, known as userlists, is built into Seesmic Desktop. It’s not perfect yet, but this is one of my favorite features because ever since Pownce was shut down, I had a lot of ex-Powncers that I follow and no way to keep track of them without their tweets getting lost among the others. Now with Seesmic Desktop, I can easily follow/check in on them.

The second feature which Twitter had but stopped was tracking. Saved searches in Seesmic Desktop adds this. This is also built into Twhirl, but that’s not important. I use saved searches to track local events, my name, blog, Doctor Who news, etc. Sometimes if there’s huge news about something, I may follow that as well, but only temporarily since some things can bring in a lot of tweets.

And, thank you, thank you for integrating Facebook! One app to interact on both Facebook and Twitter is awesome!

Things I don’t like:

  • It takes up a lot of space. The fonts in the tweets are too large and in such a compact space which creates a lot of vertical scrolling. Twhirl had this down perfectly allowing more tweets to be displayed in a small amount of space.
  • My Facebook account should not be my default account. I do not use Facebook like I use Twitter. Everytime I close Seesmic Desktop to the tray and then open it, Facebook is automatically selected. This has caused me to post things to Facebook that I did not want to post there! I had thought my Twitter account was selected, because that was selected before it went to the tray.
  • Don’t try to be the best app that has everything. My impression from what I’ve been reading on Twitter, that every little thing someone suggests is going to be added. Please don’t do this. I know Seesmic Desktop needs to have many features to compete with TweetDeck, but it doesn’t need to have every feature that everyone requests. Be the best app by having the best features.
  • Memory usage. I’ve heard some of this is due to being an AIR app, but Twhirl seemed to handle this better. So, I think some of this could be worked on. I’ve been able to leave Twhirl running for days without ever closing it and it would never feel sluggish. I can’t even do anything in Seesmic Desktop after it’s open for one day!

Features I would like to see:

  • Searches that aren’t saved. I have a habit of searching and forgetting about the searches. Searches that I only wanted to look up temporarily, but not to be saved and followed.
  • The word ’searches’ should be referred to as tracking. When I think of searching, I’m just searching for a keyword and find (or don’t find) what I’m looking for.
  • Do not expand the window to make room for a search. Instead, just display it over the main area. It adds the search by default to the list anyway. So when I search, add it to the list and then select it and display it without adding a new column. Maybe this could be a way to make it feel more like Twhirl? Obviously, this would have to be an option for the user so those who like it how it is won’t be disappointed, but also to please those who are happy with Twhirl.
  • Easier way to add users to userlists. I know this is being suggested by many, but I’m including it here anyway. Some people are suggesting to offer a checklist or drag-and-drop way of adding users. Do not offer both a checklist or drag-and-drop option! This just adds too much to the app. Decide for the users how the lists are created and stick with it. I think a checklist would be the best way to go, because dragging and dropping is harder on a laptop with a touchpad.
  • Per account searches. To me, this is very important. Twhirl has this because for each account you have a separate window. In each window, you have your searches. I would like to see this feature added to Seesmic Desktop because it is so useful. Currently it just selects my last added Twitter account whenever I reply to or follow someone from in a search. Then I have to manually switch to the account I wanted to use.
  • Custom notifications. Twhirl did it right. There needs to be an option to select how many notifications appear at one time, length of time they appear and which accounts they appear for, including each individual search. I cannot have Seesmic Desktop open while I am working because it usually fills up half my screen when there are many updates at once.
    seesmicdesktop_notify
  • Facebook notifications. I do not mean notifying me of a new update. I am referring to those notifications when logged into Facebook, that appear on the bottom right notifying of new comments others have left, or new app updates, etc. Things that do not appear on the home page. Hopefully this is possible.
  • More Facebook features. Ability to see if users are online and possibly post to their wall or send a private message.
  • Sidebar scrolling. I don’t like scrolling the entire sidebar when my searches have gone past the length of the sidebar. There has to be a better way to do this. Maybe make the scrolling a little faster. Right now it takes so long to get back to the top so I can click on HOME! I guess another option could be moving HOME, REPLIES, PRIVATE and SENT to another location on the window.

I may update this post frequently as I think up new ideas or things I don’t like about Seesmic Desktop. Since it is still in preview mode, it will be changing often and some of the above may be added and if so, I’ll cross them out.

Here are some others that have given their own thoughts on Seesmic Desktop:

New Host, New Look, Fresh Install

I’ve spent quite a bit of time trying to move this site over to a new host and have finally done it. Although, it’s missing things like some comments and doesn’t display the correct amount of comments either.

The reason I had so many troubles is that the database had duplicate stuff in it, somehow. So when I tried to import to a new database, it would display an error. Eventually I was able to use the import feature in WordPress, but still leaving out quite a bit because it would time out.

Since I do not want a lot of downtime, I’m just going to be happy that the site is live on the new host and with a new look, only because I had problems getting the old one to work correctly with the features that were enabled on it. I’m running less plugins now. I could have spent time fixing the old one, but I don’t have the time!

Anyway, I apologize for the lack of posting I’ve been doing, and promise to start posting some more content on here.

If you find anything that looks odd or isn’t working, please let me know. I kind of just threw everything up in a hurry and still have a few things to change.

For those of you who are still subscribed after all this time, thank you!

UPDATED: Notepad Chaos Tumblr Theme

UPDATE: I have updated this theme (download link at bottom of post). Please read all instructions and comments below before asking for help.

See changes in the list below:

  • More comments in the code to make it easier for those of you having trouble looking through the code.
  • Removed references to Pownce since it is no longer available.
  • You are not required to find hosting for the images. But, I do recommend that if you can host the images somewhere else yourself, please do. There is no guarantee that the images will always be available. They are all currently being hosted at ImageShack. The zip still includes the images for those of you who want to upload them somewhere.

A lot of you have been waiting for this theme to be made available for Tumblr. I had requested permission to make it available to the public! I wouldn’t have done this if I hadn’t received so many comments about it on my Tumblr blog, Random Alisha. Thanks to Smashing Magazine and Evan Eckard, you can download the theme!

Because I am new to Tumblr and how the code works, please do not direct Tumblr questions to me. There is help for that on the Tumblr site. If you need any help regarding setting up the theme, I will do my best to help you. If you need to customize any part of the theme such as the images, please download the original WordPress theme. There is a PSD file included.

Features

  • Tumblr’s custom colors
  • Feed icons. If you import any feeds from RSS Feed, Last.fm, Digg, Twitter or Pownce, the theme will display an icon. For example, if you say something on Pownce, on your Tumblr page there will be a little Pownce icon on the left side.
  • Disqus comments per post and in the sidebar.
  • Last.fm recently listened to next to blog title via feed.informer.

Instructions

To use this theme, download the zip file and extract it. Open up notepad_tumblr.html with an editor. I use Notepad++ if you would prefer not using plain Notepad. You will need to replace all instances of “yourdomain.com/tumblr/images” in the URLs with your actual domain/location of where you will place the images.

For the about link underneath the search, you will need to edit the link in the code. If you don’t have an about page, then just create a post and then get the link to the post and insert it into the correct place in the code.

Then, at the top, underneath the title of your blog, there are a few links for Twitter, Pownce, etc. You will need to replace those as well with your own.

You will need to replace “yourname” where Disqus comments appear with your own when you sign up. I have left comments in the code. There are two places where it needs to be changed. And then if you want the recent comments in the sidebar, I’ve left a comment of where to place that code towards the bottom of it. You will have to get the code for that from your Disqus account.

For the recently listened to Last.fm song next to the blog title, you will need to go to the feed.informer website and create your own code and replace it with the one between the comment.

For Tumblr’s custom colors, if you go to your dashboard to customize the theme, you will see a Colors tab. The following can be customized: Title (blog title), Description (appears in the footer), Nav Links (recent posts list in the sidebar), Date, Post-Title, Text (main text throughout), Inline Link (links inside a post). None of the others will change anything in the theme. If you need anything more custom than that, you will need to look through the code and edit it.

After you have edited the theme, copy and paste it into Tumblr!

To see the theme in action, view the demo (my own tumblr blog). If you’re ready, go ahead and download the theme!

If anything at all was confusing with the instructions, please let me know and I’ll try to help you.

Note: For those of you having issues with the top portion of the theme not looking right, try using Flickr for image hosting. This seems to be a common problem. Thanks to ChaCha Fance for mentioning this in the comments.
